Hatchable is used by twelve-year-olds on phones and by grandparents on tablets. This page says what we have done, what we have not, and how to tell us when something does not work for you.

What we have done

Text you can read

Body text is 7.0:1 against white, which passes the strictest contrast level in the guidelines. The colour we previously used for hints and captions was 4.48:1 and failed, so we replaced it everywhere.

A focus ring you can see

Every link, button and field shows a thick navy outline when you reach it by keyboard, and a white one on dark sections. The brand yellow was 1.4:1 on white and effectively invisible, so it is not used for this.

Borders on every field

Inputs and buttons have a visible edge at rest, not only when you touch them, and every field has a label above it rather than a placeholder standing in for one.

Keyboard and screen reader support

Menus open and close with the keyboard and return focus where you expect. Diagrams carry a written description, and decorative icons are hidden from screen readers so they are not read aloud.

It works on a phone

The site is built to work down to a 375 pixel wide screen without sideways scrolling.

What we have not done

• We have not had an independent accessibility audit.
• We have not tested every page with every screen reader.
• The course videos do not yet have captions, which is the gap we consider most serious.
• Some older pages have not been rechecked since we corrected the colours.

Captions are the one we would fix first. Until then, most of the course is written rather than spoken, so a student who cannot use the videos can still do nearly all of it.
