Who can use it

The course is written for people aged 12 and up. Teachers, camp leaders and anyone running a group are welcome too.

If you are under the age of majority where you live, which is 18 or 19 depending on the province or territory, you should have a parent, guardian or teacher who knows you are using Hatchable.

What it costs

Nothing. There is no fee, no subscription, no premium version and no per-student charge, and we do not ask for a card. Hatchable is free to use. We are not a charity or a not-for-profit, and we do not claim to be. The course is simply free.

We may change what the course contains, or how it works, and we will try to give notice when a change matters.

Your work is yours

Everything a student writes, uploads or builds on Hatchable belongs to them. Their business plan, their pitch, their photos and their report are theirs, and we claim no ownership of any of it.

We store it so we can show it back to them, show it to their teacher if they have one, and show it on a page they choose to share. That is the only permission we need and the only one we take.

The course material itself, meaning the lessons, videos, worked examples and teacher guides, belongs to Hatchable. Teachers and program leaders are welcome to use it with their groups.

Money, and what we are not

No money passes through Hatchable. When somebody pledges support, we write down that they promised it. When somebody orders from a student's shop, we write down the order. The money moves directly between those people and the student, in whatever way they choose.

That means we are not a payment service, we hold no funds, and we take no fee or commission. It also means we cannot settle a dispute about whether money was sent or received. We only hold the record the student kept.

A pledge is encouragement, not an investment. Nobody who backs a student receives a share of anything, and nothing on Hatchable is an offer of a security.

Being decent, and what we will not allow

Please do not use Hatchable to:

• bully, harass or say cruel things to anyone
• upload anything illegal, or anything that is not appropriate for a room full of twelve-year-olds
• pretend to be somebody else
• collect other people's information, or try to reach parts of the site that are not yours
• sell anything that would be unlawful to sell, or that a young person should not be selling

We can suspend or close an account that does any of that, and if a student is part of a class we will tell their teacher.

Sharing, and taking it back

A student decides what to share. A pitch, a shop and a report are private until they turn sharing on, and they can turn it off at any moment or generate a new link, which immediately breaks every link they sent before.

Nothing a student enters into a class showcase is visible outside that class until their teacher has approved it.

What we do not promise

Hatchable teaches how business works. We do not promise that a student's idea will succeed, that anybody will back it, or that they will make money. A project that does not work is a normal outcome and the course treats it as one.

We are not an accredited school and grant no credits. The certificate a student receives at the end is a record of the work they did, not a qualification.

Nothing on Hatchable is legal, tax or financial advice. If a student's project grows into something real, they should speak to somebody qualified.

We do our best to keep the site running and your work safe, but we cannot promise it will never be unavailable.

Closing an account

You can ask us to close your account and delete everything in it at any time by emailing hello@hatchable.ca. See the privacy policy for what that removes.
