Jenny
16-year-old who loves art, lives in small-town Canada
Assignment 1 Example — Jenny
About Jenny: Jenny is a 16-year-old who loves to draw and create new things. She lives in a small town in Canada and is passionate about art and local culture.
Jenny identified a problem within her own creative journey and entrepreneurial work. Here is what she wrote:
"I used to love visiting our local art gallery with my dad. Now it's no Louvre, but I love and appreciate that it honours local artists not only from my community but also within Canada — especially Indigenous art, which can often be overlooked. But then Covid happened and, like everything else, our visits were disrupted. I was hoping that at some point my art would be featured in that gallery, but now I'm not so sure. I have dreams of my work being posted, viewed, and critiqued.
So when I found a new medium for my work besides just paper and canvas, I felt like I had a new avenue. When my dad suggested putting my t-shirt designs on Instagram, my work was still being viewed during the lockdown.
The problem I am having is that I don't like the feeling of being rushed in my work. But at the same time, the demand for custom shirts has shot through the roof. I'm not sure if I like this idea of custom shirts because I have to consider everything the buyer is demanding, and that may not include the full extent of my art and designs. So I don't know if I should just focus on creating t-shirts with my own motivation or focus on custom shirts.
I think one solution is that I focus on my own designs and only allocate a certain amount of time to custom orders — such as only taking on one custom order per week or month, depending on how much time I have."
Notice how Jenny:
- Identified a community (local art lovers and her growing customer base)
- Described a real tension she faces (creative freedom vs. customer demand)
- Proposed a practical initial solution (limiting custom orders to protect creative time)
Jenny's problem is personal — but it connects to a larger challenge many creative entrepreneurs face. What community challenge will you explore?
