About Jenny: Jenny is a 16-year-old artist from small-town Canada who is validating her problem around balancing custom t-shirt orders with her own artistic growth.

Here is how Jenny approached the Final Assignment:

"I first made a deep reflection about my project idea and the problems I want to solve with it. Then I followed the tasks:

As my problem is related to my personal creative business, I decided to use observational research — specifically looking at my custom design orders. I want to understand how many custom orders I have focused on in recent months and compare that to the time I have had for my own artwork. I also created a customer questionnaire.

Task 1 — Observational Research

I made a framework to track my observations over time:

FieldData to Collect
Month_______________
Number of custom orders
Total hours spent on custom orders
Average hours per order
Total original T-shirt designs created
Ratio of custom orders to original designs

This framework helps me see the pattern clearly — am I spending too much time on custom work and not enough on my own art?

Task 2 — Customer Satisfaction Survey

I designed a short survey for customers who received my work:

  1. "Rate your overall experience from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied)."
  2. "In your own words, describe how you feel about our company and products."
  3. "How likely are you to recommend our products to others? (1 = not at all, 10 = very likely)"

Task 3 — Conclusion

After conducting the observational research and speaking with clients, I understand that solving this problem is crucial for me as an artist. I do not think I am at the point where I want to spend the majority of my time completing custom orders. I want to focus on my artwork and grow as an artist first.

I feel that with custom orders I have to follow what the customer wants, and it takes away from my creativity. Although limiting custom orders may reduce my income in the short term, for my own artistic growth I think it is the right decision."

What made Jenny's approach strong:

  • She used observational research — a method perfectly suited to a problem she could study directly
  • She gathered customer feedback to understand the demand side of her problem
  • Her conclusion was honest and personal — she made a decision that aligned with her values as an artist
