Section 1 — Discovering New Possibilities
What is an entrepreneurial opportunity?
An entrepreneurial opportunity is a chance to create value by solving a problem or meeting an unmet need. The first step to finding one is to be observant — and to observe with an empathetic view that considers not only yourself, but also the people around you.
When we look at the world around us, several problems come to mind: inequality, environmental destruction, lack of access to education, and much more. These are not just challenges — they are opportunities for entrepreneurial action.
Why innovation is urgent
The world is changing rapidly. Research shows that many jobs that exist today may not exist in ten years. This means that having an innovative mindset — the ability to spot opportunities and create new solutions — is becoming one of the most valuable skills anyone can have.
Innovation is increasingly urgent in today's world. Fortunately, having an innovative look that seeks opportunities is a skill that can be developed.
Two kinds of innovative solutions
There are different ways that entrepreneurship creates value:
-
Business innovation — developing new products, services, or technologies that meet customer needs and generate profit. Business innovation creates competitive advantage and customer loyalty.
-
Social innovation — creating products, services, or actions that solve real societal problems. In social innovation, personal profit is not the main goal — making a positive difference is. However, social ventures still need to be sustainable.
Both types start in the same place: recognizing a genuine problem.
Your entrepreneur's eye
Starting today, practice looking at your world differently. Ask yourself:
- What frustrates people in my school or community?
- What services are missing or could be improved?
- Who is being left out or underserved?
The answers to these questions are where entrepreneurial opportunities live.
