Jacob's Final Assignment — Choose Metrics for His Project
Character: Jacob, 15, Toronto, Ontario. Korean-Canadian. Project: After-school tutoring and mentorship club for students in his neighbourhood.
Step 1 — His Project
"My project is called The Study Hub. It's an after-school club where older students mentor younger ones in math and science. My goal is to help kids who are struggling academically by connecting them with peer mentors who understand exactly what it's like to find these subjects hard. My most important goal right now is increasing student participation and proving that the mentorship is actually helping students improve."
Step 2 — His 3 KPIs
KPI 1: Student Participation Rate
- Why: If students aren't showing up consistently, the program can't have any impact. Regular attendance is the foundation of everything else.
- How: I'll take attendance at every session and calculate the percentage of enrolled students who attend each week.
KPI 2: Academic Progress Score
- Why: The whole point of The Study Hub is to improve grades. If students aren't improving academically, I need to change my approach.
- How: I'll ask participating students to share their test scores at the start and end of each semester, with permission from their parents.
KPI 3: Student Satisfaction Rating
- Why: If students don't enjoy the sessions or don't feel comfortable with their mentors, they won't come back. Satisfaction tells me about the relationship quality — which matters as much as the academic results.
- How: I'll send a short monthly survey rated out of 5 stars, with one open question asking what could be better.

"I chose these three KPIs because they cover the three most important dimensions of my project: reach, impact, and experience. Participation tells me how many students I'm serving. Academic progress tells me if I'm actually helping them. Satisfaction tells me if the experience is good enough that they'll keep coming — and maybe tell their friends."
"If academic progress wasn't improving, I'd review the mentorship approach — maybe mentors need training, or sessions need to be more structured. I'd also talk directly to students to find out what they need. Programs like Futurpreneur Canada can also provide mentorship and guidance for student-led initiatives like mine, which would help me build a more effective program."
