Section 4c - Finalizing the Lean Canvas for the project

Key Metrics in Your Lean Canvas

The Key Metrics element is one of the nine building blocks of the Lean Canvas. It answers a simple but powerful question: How will you know if your business or project is working?

This is where your KPIs come to life — written down, prioritized, and connected to real targets.

Five Steps to Complete Your Key Metrics Box

Step 1 — Identify Your Goals Start with what you want to achieve. Your metrics must flow from your goals, not the other way around.

Ask: What is the most important outcome for my project right now?

Step 2 — Choose Your Metrics Based on your goals, select KPIs that measure your actual progress. Use the four qualities from Section 4b: alignment, measurability, relevance, and adaptability.

Common starting points:

  • Revenue or sales
  • Number of customers or participants
  • Customer satisfaction score
  • Conversion rate
  • Community reach or engagement

Step 3 — Prioritize Your Top 3–5 You don't need to track everything. Focus on the 3 to 5 metrics that matter most right now. More than that becomes overwhelming and dilutes your attention.

Tip: Ask yourself — if I could only look at three numbers each week, which three would tell me the full story of my project?

Step 4 — Set Targets A KPI without a target is just a number. Set a specific, time-bound goal for each metric.

| KPI | Target | |-----|--------| | Monthly revenue | $500 by end of Month 3 | | Customer satisfaction | 4.2 out of 5 average | | New participants | 20 sign-ups per month |

Step 5 — Track Over Time Review your KPIs regularly — weekly or monthly. Look for trends, not just snapshots. Progress compounds, and setbacks reveal where to improve.

Use a simple spreadsheet, a notebook, or a free tool like Google Sheets to track your metrics over time.

What Goes in the Key Metrics Box?

When you write your Key Metrics on the Lean Canvas, include:

  • The name of each metric
  • The target you're aiming for
  • The timeframe (e.g., "by Month 3" or "per quarter")

Example:

Key Metrics:

  1. Monthly sales → $500 by Month 3
  2. Customer satisfaction → 4+ out of 5
  3. Repeat customers → 30% of all buyers

Why This Step Is Powerful

Completing your Key Metrics forces you to be honest about what success looks like. Vague goals are easy to ignore — specific, measurable targets hold you accountable and help you celebrate real wins.
