About Jacob: Jacob is a 15-year-old of Korean descent who lives in Toronto. He's empathetic, observant, and started a tutoring club at his school.
Jacob made a short video animation set in Toronto. Here's his story:
"When I was younger, I used to wonder why the older boys would just huddle around on the side of the street corners... At school I would see some of those same boys, where one was in my class. He looked like he was struggling whenever we learned something new.
One day my friend Aarit and I decided to ask if he needed any help. I didn't know if I should feel bad for Will. But this gave me an idea: What if there was a time after school for a homework club where tutors could be available to help friends who really needed extra help, instead of standing in those huddles? It could also be a place to feel safe and ask questions instead of falling behind. And that is where my tutoring idea started.
I first asked my teacher Ms. Mandy if we could use the classroom, and then Aarit and I put up a poster asking for tutors and welcoming students. It started small and has now grown to have enough friends to even play a basketball game afterwards."
