My Problem Statement
Students in grades 6–10 from lower-income families in Scarborough, Toronto, lack access to affordable after-school academic support, causing them to fall behind in core subjects like math and science.
My Top 3 Solution Ideas
Idea 1: Free open study space with drop-in volunteer tutoring A space at the local library (open 3:30–6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays) where students can come to do homework and get help from volunteer high-school tutors on an informal, drop-in basis. This is a service — I would recruit and coordinate the volunteers.
Idea 2: Structured after-school tutoring club A more formal program: students sign up for a specific subject (math or science), and volunteer tutors run structured weekly sessions with a curriculum. This is a service with more organization and consistency than Idea 1.
Idea 3: Online homework help platform A simple online platform (could start as just a WhatsApp group or a basic website) where students post questions and volunteer tutors respond within 24 hours. This would be a digital service that doesn't require anyone to be in the same place at the same time.
My Three Hypotheses
Hypothesis 1: If I open a free drop-in study space at the Scarborough Civic Centre library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30–6:00 PM, with at least 3 volunteer tutors available per session, then at least 20 students from nearby schools will attend at least once within the first 4 weeks.
Hypothesis 2: If I run a structured weekly tutoring club for grade 7 and 8 students focused on math, with 5 volunteer high-school tutors running sessions of 8–10 students each, then participants who attend at least 6 sessions will show an average improvement of 10% or more on their next math test compared to their previous test.
Hypothesis 3: If I create an online homework help platform (starting with a WhatsApp group) where students can post questions and receive answers from volunteer tutors within 24 hours, then at least 40 students in Scarborough will actively use the platform (posting at least one question) within the first 6 weeks of launch.
