Section 3a — The UVP Canvas Map
What Is Canvas?
Canvas is like a visual map for your entrepreneurial project. It helps you organize the crucial aspects of your business in a clear, concise snapshot. While there are various types of canvases, in this course we're using the Lean Canvas — a powerful tool designed for startups and entrepreneurs that focuses on solving problems and testing ideas.
We'll talk a lot about the Lean Canvas model, so start getting familiar with it now.
The Unique Value Proposition Canvas Map
The Value Proposition Canvas Map is a tool used by startups and product teams to design and refine their value proposition. It works alongside other methods like customer research and competitor analysis.
This canvas has two vital sections:
- The Customer Profile — understanding your audience
- The Value Map — describing how your solution creates value
Let's explore each one.
The Customer Profile
The Customer Profile is like creating a detailed portrait of your target audience. It helps you understand their needs, problems, and preferences. It has three elements:
a) Customer Jobs What tasks, goals, or problems does your target audience want to accomplish or solve? For example: "Somali-Canadian parents want their children to stay connected to their heritage language."
b) Customer Pains What challenges, risks, obstacles, or negative feelings do they face while trying to accomplish those jobs? For example: "Parents feel guilty and worried that their children are losing their cultural identity."
c) Customer Gains What positive outcomes, benefits, or desires do they hope to achieve? For example: "Children who can communicate confidently with grandparents and participate fully in Somali community life."
Take a moment to think about these questions for your own project. You've been working on this since Module 2, so answering them should feel natural at this point!
