Assignment — Choose Metrics for Your Project
Now it's time to apply everything you've learned in Module 7 to your own project. You'll select meaningful KPIs, set targets, and add them to your Lean Canvas.
What You'll Do
This assignment has five steps. Work through them in order, and be as specific as possible. The more detail you include, the more useful your metrics will be.
Step 1 — Think About Your Project
Start by revisiting your project idea. What problem are you solving? Who are you helping? What does success look like for your project?
Write two or three sentences describing your project and its most important goal right now.
Step 2 — Pick 3 KPIs
Choose exactly three Key Performance Indicators for your project. Each KPI must:
- Connect directly to your project's goals (alignment)
- Be something you can actually measure (measurability)
- Tell you something meaningful about your progress (relevance)
For each KPI, write:
- The name of the metric
- Why you chose it (how it connects to your goal)
- How you would measure it (what data source or method you'd use)
Step 3 — Set a Goal for Each KPI
For every KPI you selected, write a SMART target:
- Specific — what exactly do you want to achieve?
- Measurable — what number are you aiming for?
- Achievable — is this realistic given your resources?
- Relevant — does it connect to your project's mission?
- Time-bound — by when will you reach this target?
Example: "Increase monthly participants from 10 to 30 within the next three months."
Step 4 — Explain Your Choices
In a short paragraph (3–5 sentences), explain:
- Why these three KPIs matter most for your project right now
- How they reflect your project's mission and goals
- What you would do if you discovered one KPI was not improving
Step 5 — Add to Your Lean Canvas
Write out your updated Key Metrics box for the Lean Canvas. It should include all three KPIs, their targets, and their timeframes, formatted clearly.
Example format:
Key Metrics:
- Monthly sales → $500 by Month 3
- Customer satisfaction → 4+ out of 5
- New customers → 15 per month
Submission Tips
- Be specific — "increase revenue" is not enough. "Reach $300 in monthly revenue by Month 2" is.
- Choose KPIs that you could realistically track with tools available to you (spreadsheet, survey, sales records, etc.)
- Think about both short-term wins and long-term sustainability
Good luck — this is the work that turns ideas into real plans.
