Section 4 — Applying the Lean Canvas in the Project
Introduction to Lean Canvas
The Lean Canvas is a simplified version of the Business Model Canvas, designed specifically for startups and entrepreneurs like us. It's a one-page blueprint that focuses on solving problems and testing ideas — rather than getting lost in complex business planning.
The Lean Canvas was developed by Ash Maurya as part of the Lean Startup methodology. Unlike traditional business plans that can take weeks to write, the Lean Canvas fits on a single page and can be updated as you learn more about your market.
The Nine Elements of the Lean Canvas
In the Lean Canvas model, there are nine critical elements. Each one plays a crucial role in your entrepreneurial journey. Let's look at all nine:
- Customer Segments — Who are the people you want to help?
- Problem — What's the core problem you want to solve for them?
- Unique Value Proposition — What makes your solution special and different from alternatives?
- Solution — What's your idea to solve that problem?
- Channels — How are you going to reach your customers?
- Revenue Streams — How will you sustain or fund your solution? (For a not-for-profit, how will you cover costs or generate resources?)
- Cost Structure — What are the costs involved in delivering your solution?
- Key Metrics — What will you measure to know you're making progress?
- Unfair Advantage — What gives you an edge over the competition that can't easily be copied?
You've Already Started!
Here's the exciting part: you've been filling in the Lean Canvas since Module 1 — you just didn't know it yet!
By now, you should already have answers for four of the nine elements:
- Customer Segments (Element 1) — You know who your target audience is from your empathy research in Module 2
- Problem (Element 2) — You've identified and validated the core problem through Design Thinking and 5W1H
- Unique Value Proposition (Element 3) — You've defined your UVP through this module's market research
- Solution (Element 4) — You've developed and tested solution hypotheses in Module 3
By the end of this course, you'll have all nine elements completed — giving you a full Lean Canvas and a written Entrepreneurial Plan.
For now, let's focus on completing the final assignment of Module 4, which will lock in those first four elements for the one project you're choosing to pursue!
