Chosen project: The Animal Lovers Shelter
The Animal Lovers Shelter's goal is to "find permanent homes for 100 homeless animals in our community by the end of the year."
My SMART Analysis
Specific: The goal is clear and specific — finding permanent homes for homeless animals. We know exactly what they want to achieve: adoption placements for stray dogs and cats in their community.
Measurable: It's measurable because they aim to find homes for a specific number (100) of animals. The shelter can track adoptions week by week to see if they're on pace to reach 100 by year's end. That's a clear scorecard.
Achievable: It is achievable, given the time frame, if they have the resources to support adoption efforts — things like staff, volunteers, advertising, and an adoption process. One hundred animals over a full year is approximately 2 animals per week, which sounds manageable for an established shelter.
Relevant: This goal is highly relevant to the shelter's mission of providing a safe and caring home for animals. Everything they do — caring for animals, running adoption events, connecting with the community — directly supports this goal.
Time-bound: It's time-bound, with a clear deadline set by the end of the year. This creates urgency and allows the team to plan their timeline: how many adoptions per month they need to stay on track.
My Conclusion
The Animal Lovers Shelter has an excellent SMART goal. It is fully SMART — specific (finding homes for animals), measurable (100 animals), achievable (given resources and time), relevant (core to their mission), and time-bound (by year's end). This is the kind of clear, well-defined goal that gives a team focus and motivation. If I were advising them, I'd suggest they also track monthly adoption numbers so they can adjust their efforts if they fall behind pace mid-year.
